Taking Your Jewellery Collection on Holiday

Tips For Taking Your Jewellery Collection on Holiday!

Taking your jewellery collection on holiday can help to make sure every outfit is complete, however, you do need to be careful when it comes to how you pack and store your jewellery when you are away. So, we are here to introduce a few simple tips to keep your jewellery safe whilst you are on holiday!

Keep It In Your Hand Luggage

The first tip we have is to keep your jewellery with you in your hand luggage. Firstly, check-in bags often get lost, so if you have sentimental or expensive jewellery, it is particularly important to keep them with you. Although lost baggage is often returned to the owner, this isn’t always the case, so it is best to keep it with you.

Also, when you check in your jewellery, it will go into the hold which can reach very low temperatures when you are flying. When a piece of jewellery is too hot or cold, it can cause damage to gemstones, particularly if you have more delicate jewellery.

All in all, having jewellery in your hand luggage will keep it in the best condition possible and you can also rest in the knowledge that it is safe with you!

Pack Each Piece Individually

Next up, you need to make sure that each piece of jewellery is packed individually in soft pouches. This will make sure that nothing rubs together so none of your jewellery will get tarnished.

If you pack any clothing in your carry-on luggage, such as special pieces of luxury clothing that you didn’t want to check-in, keeping the jewellery in soft pouches is especially important so that nothing gets caught on the clothing that could potentially pull the thread and cause damage.

The best way to pack your jewellery is in a small, travel jewellery box, where each piece can be stored separately and there is no risk of it causing damage to anything else in your hand luggage.

Keep It At Room Temperature

When you arrive at your holiday, you need to make sure that you keep your jewellery at room temperature. As mentioned, if your jewellery is too hot or cold, it can damage settings or gemstones. So, if you are visiting a very hot or cold country, try to keep the room at room temperature.

You also need to make sure that your jewellery is kept in a dry place, as any kind of humidity or moisture can seriously affect fine jewellery. This is why taking a portable jewellery box is great, as it will help to protect the jewellery from the majority of the humidity. You should also keep your jewellery collection in a cupboard or wardrobe when you are away, to make sure that no direct sunlight is shining on it and heating up the jewellery box!

Don’t Wear Your Jewellery With Suncream or in Water

Our last tip is to make sure that you don’t wear your jewellery with suncream or in water. Suncream can easily build up on your jewellery, causing settings or clasps to be gunked up and dirty.

Also, when it comes to water, it can cause jewellery to tarnish and discolour. Pool water contains chlorine that is very damaging and saltwater can cause erosion. For these reasons, it is best to remove jewellery completely during the day to prevent any damage, and then save your wonderful collection for the evenings when it won’t be at risk of damage!
